Tips For Spring Roof Maintenance

The spring season is a great time to get that roof inspected, cleaned, and repaired before summer. If you’re like us here at The Grace Family Roofing Company, we recommend getting it done now so you don’t have to worry about a bigger issue occurring.

The first step toward a healthy, well-maintained roof is to inspect it regularly to determine any signs of damage or leaks—and have it addressed as early as possible. And in this blog, we will share with you some great tips for doing your roof maintenance this spring.

1. Check The Roof (Shingles)

Make sure the shingles are not curled up or cracked. See if there’s any missing piece. This can be an indication of water intrusion. Also, check for missing or lost shingles. These should be replaced immediately.

2. Look For Leaks

Look for cracks on the fascia board around the perimeter of your home. It may also be helpful to look at the underside of the shingle where they meet the roof deck. You might see some moisture stains. If these areas show signs of leakage, then call your local roofer right away to repair them.

3. Clean The Gutters & Downspouts

If your gutters are clogged, they won’t drain properly. Make sure all debris has been removed from the downspout area. Then clean out the gutter itself. Use a garden hose to rinse the entire length of the gutter. Be careful when cleaning the downspout because it could cause erosion problems if too much debris gets into the system.

4. Check Any Damaged Siding

Check the siding for damaged spots. If you notice any holes, make repairs immediately. Otherwise, you’ll likely experience more serious issues later on.

5. Inspect Exterior Wall Surfaces

Inspect the exterior walls for any cracks or other damages. If you find any, call your local roofer to fix them.

6. Replace Weather Stripping

Weatherstripping helps keep water from seeping through windows and doors. If you notice any gaps, seal them with weatherstripping tape.

7. Check For Mold Or Algae Growth

Mold and algae growth can occur both inside your attic space and on the roof itself. If you spot any, contact your local roofer to address the problem. The reason is that proper removal of mold or algae growth is best done by a professional.

8. Check Chimney Flues

Chimneys can become blocked during cold weather months, causing smoke to build up inside your home. To prevent this, make sure chimney flue liners are installed correctly. If you notice any cracks or tears, replace them immediately.

9. Document any damage

Take photos of any damaged areas. Include measurements and details about what caused the damage. Keep copies of these documents for future reference.

10. Have A Professional Do An Inspection

If you’re planning to sell your house soon, schedule a professional inspection. They will help you identify potential problems such as mold growth, dry rot, or termites.
